Can You Eat Leftovers Cold in the UK?

According to FSA guidance, leftovers can be eaten cold if they were properly cooked, cooled and refrigerated within two hours. This does not apply when the storage history is uncertain.

United Kingdom · Practical storage decision

Start with cooking and cooling

The food must have been cooked thoroughly, then cooled and put in the fridge promptly. Chilling cannot undo a long period at unsafe temperatures.

How long is the general guideline?

FSA advises consuming properly refrigerated leftovers within 48 hours or freezing them if that is not possible. Prepared rice and some other foods need more specific rules.

When should you avoid eating them cold?

If you cannot establish when food was prepared, whether it cooled promptly or whether the refrigerator stayed cold, do not use the date alone as evidence that it is safe.
