United Kingdom · Practical storage decision
Choose the refrigerator when there is time
Place the food in a container that catches drips, especially for meat or poultry. Allow it to thaw through to the centre, rather than using room temperature as a shortcut.
Use the microwave directly before cooking
The defrost setting can partly warm some areas of a food. Cook it straight after microwave defrosting and follow the manufacturer’s product instructions.
When does the 24-hour rule start?
FSA household guidance recommends using food within 24 hours after it has fully defrosted, not 24 hours after it was removed from the freezer. The existing tool calculates only that specific starting condition.
