Why Freeze Leftovers in Small Portions?

Freezing only what you need can reduce waste and avoid repeated defrosting. The FSA recommends cooling warm dishes before freezing and dividing them into smaller portions.

United Kingdom · Practical storage decision

Choose manageable amounts

Put a single-meal quantity into an appropriate freezer container or bag so the portion can cool and freeze efficiently.

Chill safely before storage

After cooking, cool leftovers promptly and freeze as soon as practical. Do not leave a large pot out to cool for an extended period.

Defrost once for the meal

Follow packaging directions, preferably thawing in the fridge. Foods thawed in the fridge need their own timely-use guidance; reheating repeatedly is not a way to reset a date.
