Freezer Burn: Does It Mean Food Is Unsafe?

Freezer burn damages food quality when dry freezer air reaches its surface. The FSA distinguishes this quality issue from evidence that the food has remained safely handled.

United Kingdom · Practical storage decision

Why does freezer burn happen?

Poorly sealed food can lose moisture, dry out and develop ice crystals or altered texture in cold dry air. The change is primarily about eating quality.

How to reduce it

Wrap portions carefully, use suitable air-tight containers or freezer wrap, and label what was frozen. Avoid opening and repacking repeatedly when not necessary.

What freezer burn cannot tell you

It cannot prove food was never thawed, left warm, or contaminated. A freezer period is a quality reference, not a general permission to eat food with an unknown history.
