Can an Overfilled Fridge Keep Food Cold?

An overcrowded refrigerator can restrict circulation of cold air. The FSA recommends making room for air movement and checking the actual fridge temperature rather than relying on a dial.

United Kingdom · Practical storage decision

Leave room for air

Do not pack the refrigerator so tightly that cold air cannot circulate around stored items. Keep the door closed as much as practical.

Measure the real temperature

Use a fridge thermometer, aiming for 0–5°C, and check the reading regularly. Different shelves or heavily loaded areas may cool unevenly.

Check the food, not only the appliance

Even a functioning fridge cannot correct food that was left out too long beforehand. Products with use-by dates still require their own storage instructions.
