Can You Refreeze Food After Cooking It in the UK?

The FSA says previously frozen food may be frozen again after it has been cooked. It also advises that the cooked food should be reheated only once afterward.

United Kingdom · Practical storage decision

Cooking changes the condition

Fully cooking a defrosted ingredient creates a new prepared meal. Cool that cooked meal promptly and put it into suitable freezer portions.

Avoid repeated cycles

This is not a rule allowing repeated warming, thawing and freezing of the same ready-to-eat leftovers. Frequent temperature changes increase opportunities for bacteria to grow.

What if it thawed unsafely?

Cooking or refreezing is not a reliable rescue for a food with unknown or unsafe handling. In that situation, an ordinary storage guideline cannot establish safety.
